In many culture pregnancy and childbirth are considered shameful matter, to be hidden from view and not discussed.  As a consequence of this, many women have no idea what happens in childbirth,  or how a large baby can be born through what appears to be a small hole. Strangely, even today, some pregnant women believe, until told otherwise, that the baby is born through the umbilicus.

Because childbirth is not discussed, many women pregnant for the first time only learn of its processes from equally-ill-informed friends and older women, who all too readily tell the expectant mother of the 'terrible time they passed before the doctor cuts the baby out' also they also explain the pain and danger in childbirth. It was the Russian who introduced psychoprophylaxis, these snippets of misinformation sink deep into the memory of the pregnant woman, and a 'conditioned reflex' occurs. Because of the reflex, every time the woman thinks of childbirth, a mental image of pain, suffering, danger of death and fear is conjure up, so that a woman enters labour anxious and tense. Psychoprophylaxis seeks to eliminate this 'conditioned reflex', and replace the image of fear, anxiety and tenseness by one in which childbirth is known to be a normal event. It also seek to alter the brain's appreciation of pain, and convert it into a sensation of discomfort which can be relieved by muscular activity.
The psychoprophylaxis method depends on the belief that'conditioned reflexes' can be changed by training, because there are not built into the person's personality, and arise because of the person response, or conditioning to outside events.
It is known that pain is a relative thing. Pain is felt at different way and different time. Many patients has the capacity to feel pain in different level considering the brain threshold. The normal,  everyday painful stimuli which occur are not interpreted as pain because there fall below the threshold at which pain is felt. But the threshold can be reduced by some conditions t as fear, emotional upset, shock, hunger and cold. In this condition the stimuli which are normally not painful cross the lowered pain threshold and there are felt as pain.
Psychoprophylaxis seeks to raise the pain threshold by explaining the process of labour. And exercising on the fact to change the patients mindset. This process also get accomplished by changing the pain into muscular activity so that patient will feel free and participate in the childbirth.

Steps on training the patients.

Training takes place along two mainlines.
First, the fear of labour is reduced or eliminated by a series of talks in which the mother is told on how conception occurs, how the fetus grows, what happens in childbirth, and how she can help by learning breathing techniques.
Secondly, she is taught certain exercises, which are thought to improve her muscular control.

The breathing exercise, which is taught in the second half of pregnancy, are of three kinds. The first two are to be implement in  the first stage of labour. The breathing exercises for the first stage of labour are slow quite breathing using the rib muscles and not the diaphragm. The patient learn by demonstration and by reiteration that the onset of a construction of her womb is a signal for her to start her learnt breathing pattern. In this way she will learn that a contraction is a signal of breathing activity rather than pain. Till the second labour stage then the breathing changes.

Many do believe that psychoprophylaxis really encourage muscular control.  And for a contraction to occur there must be a message which must travel from the brain to the muscles whereby when one muscle contract the other relaxes. As this training and exercise comes to an end the mother will have ability to control herself in labour, this methods is the best method for safe and healthy pregnancy.
I do advice the ladies do enroll in this training before your labour start because the infant in the womb is also stressed if having a difficult delivery.  Please stay healthy....
